Sauerland Tour

To the Sauerland: We ride a gorgeous tour, mainly on narrow car free asphalt roads.
The trip is 76 km long, and climbs a total of 1,227 meters.
So it is a tough ride, you need to be fit.

Track: GPS Route Sauerland

Departure at 9 am from Winterswijk, the Netherlands. It is a 1½ hour car drive (150 km, mainly traffic jam free highway). We mount our bikes at 11 am.

The start is flat, along a reservoir (Verse Stausee). Starting altitude is 400 meter. Next is the first climb to the next reservoir. After that, a stiff climb to 650 meters. The descent to the Biggesee at Attendorn (300 m) is lovely, 80 km/h is feasible. Have a nice dip in the lake and a recharge at Forsthaus Ewig. Next up to a beautiful view, and down again. Then the longest climb (310 m) to the observation tower on the Nordhelle mountain (663 m). This is the highest mountain in the area. This is another source of coffee, etc. The descent to the car at the reservoir is magnificent. Have a dip if you want to wash away the salt. And after a 5 km car drive we can visit the highway restaurant.

The cycling time is 4 hours with an average of 20 km/h. Half of it is flat, 40 km for the 1,000 m ascend and back down again. Parts are very steep, a low gear 2 - 2½ meter is recommended, as well as good brakes and tyres. There is 3 hours of time for photos, swim and enjoying outdoor cafés.

Around 6 pm we are back at the car. Around 9 pm in Winterswijk. It depends on the time we take for brakes on the way. Anyway, there is no rush, as there is plenty of time for recuperation. You may want to extend the trip, go faster or can't keep up and wish to take a short cut. Both are possible... You will get a GPS mounted on your handlebars that show the route and the parking spot of the car.

Costs for this day: € 10.-
Included: use ACE's Mark Burgers as your guide, and an option to use GPS.
Not included: Food and drinks. That is too individual, so buy/bring your own.
Transport: own transport, follow Mark is the easy way to go. Carpool with other participants is an option.

We stop twice at restaurants during the cycling. Halfway, in the town of Attendorn, you can visit a shop or petrol station to buy food and drinks. Dinner is about € 8.- in a highway restaurant.

Do you wish to rent an ACE recumbent? No worries. Bikes with enough gears cost € 40.- per day. But you have to be an experience recumbent rider to join.
